Our Vision
Key to the vision for all areas of our Personal Ministry is an admonition by Jesus,
"You have received free of charge; give free of charge."
Our Original Vision
Our original vision was simply to make great-tasting, nutritious sack lunches for folks living on the street. For more than a year, the Nelsons and the Sassamans spent most every Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning preparing assembling 80 or so lunches for the street.
We were blessed to have ministries to work with (Seven Bridges To Recovery and About My Daddy's Business) and show us the ropes with regard to feeding God's children. This worked well and we were rewarded by seeing God's passion for his children. We were amazed the Holy Spirit could use a simple sack lunch to convince His children that God had a better plan for their lives than living on the street.
In late January, 2007 I was hospitalized with numbness to my hands, arms, legs and feet. The initial diagnosis was Transverse Myelitis but now that diagnosis being questioned and the doctors don't know what is causing my problems. Whatever it is that I have has wreaked havoc on my physical body. I have about 10% to 20% of the energy I had prior to the onset. While I can still walk, I can only go very short distances and a host of other symptoms accompany this malady.
Now, I told you all that to tell you this; I am probably the luckiest guy on the face of the earth.
Let me be perfectly clear about something; GOD DID NOT DO THIS TO ME. We live in a fallen world and bad stuff happens. Get over it. I did not know I was going to catch the virus resulting in whatever it is that is attacking me, but Our Lord did and HE prepared so many hearts to help us that it is often overwhelming. The Lord used my illness to open up other hearts that He prepared and while we are no longer able to handle the grind of preparing the food each week, God birthed in us the vision to feed many more people than our efforts could have ever served. Our main goal remains the same:
- Feed Hungry People
We accomplish this goal by teaching people how to safely prepare the right kind of food for the street and by connecting them with ministries that specialize in feeding hungry people on the streets for distribution. The streets are rough and even dangerous, especially for the uninitiated. Therefore we strongly encourage anyone making meals for the street to always work through an established ministry for everyone's sake.
Our goals also include providing information and training on:
- Food Safety
- Food Preparation Methods
- Nutrition
- Recipes
We can also provide assistance to our groups to help them connect with ministries and other service organizations in their areas, or the areas the group would like to serve, that are already directly engaged in feeding the hungry.
