The Square Meal Project         Group Opportunities

What's So Special About This Project?

Most people have no idea of the extent of homelessness in all cities around the world, let alone the Greater Atlanta Area. Our personal experience since November, 2005 has been a wonderful eye-opener. As we began to see the real need here on our local streets we realized we were in the Mission Fields of Atlanta. If you've been thinking of taking a short-termed mission trip, may we suggest that you can practice for that wonderful event here, not more than fifty (50) miles from home.

As we became more involved, we started looking for reliable information concerning how many people are actually homeless, here in the Atlanta area. On the United Way website we found the information we were looking for. The shocking news, in the form of solid government numbers is that there are more than six thousand seven hundred (6700) homeless people on the streets of Atlanta every day of the year. Surprised? We were as well. That number is quite startling!

Based upon an understanding of the problem, as described above, there are three (3) primary reasons we became involved in this vital Personal Ministry:

  1. We are admonished by Our Lord to feed the hungry
  2. We rarely have enough lunches to feed the people we encounter, living on the street
  3. We hope your group will be motivated to make lunches on your own

Where are the lunches made?

Multiple locations are available to prepare lunches. Please contact Mike to select the location best for your group.

When are the lunches made?

We can work with your group to make lunches during the school or work day, or evenings. Group reservation are required. Please contact Mike to schedule your group.

We are unable to prepare our special cooked/baked entrees with groups that come Friday evenings or Saturday mornings such as Macaroni & Cheese, Quiche or Meaty Mac. Food preparation on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings is limited to sandwiches for cold lunches and hot dogs or Beans & Franks as the entrees for hot lunches, depending on the arrangements you make with us ahead of time.

For service groups such as Small or Fusion Groups, the typical goal is to prepare 100 lunches for distribution to the streets of Atlanta. The need is great and the lunches won't be wasted. We will work with you to help you achieve the number of lunches your group feels led to prepare. You can plan with us to prepare fifty (50), one hundred (100), one hundred fifty (150), two hundred (200) or more.

Sack Lunches

Sack lunches with a sandwich instead of the entree are the simplest to make. If your group is newly formed or has never done a service project together before, Sack Lunches are probably your best bet.

What does it cost?

Most of the cost of making the lunches is borne by the group doing the Service Project. Purchasing the items required to make nutritious, high quality sack lunches, containing the items we suggest will cost your group anywhere from $3.00 to $5.00 each to make. If all of the people in your group share the cost, you will be able to prepare great lunches for those less fortunate, without an undue monetary burden on just one person or a few individuals.
